Ecommerce platforming continues to be a top priority and challenge for businesses of all sizes, according to a new survey by commercetools, a developer of composable commerce applications and a service provider.
The survey, which gathered insights from ecommerce managers at 150 retail, wholesale, B2B manufacturing, and consumer packaged goods organizations, revealed that the primary reason companies are considering upgrading or replacing their ecommerce platforms is to improve customer experience.
“The leading trigger for ecommerce platform migrations is the need to enhance user experiences, which enables differentiation and helps businesses remain competitive,” said Kelly Goetsch, chief strategy officer at commercetools. “Failing to innovate can, and will, result in serious business consequences.”
Impact of user experience (UX) on ecommerce platform upgrades
Through the survey results, commercetools identified key findings about how user experience determines if — or when — it’s time for an ecommerce platform upgrade.
It found that 90% of organizations reported improved sales and revenue following platform upgrades. Along those lines, 30% of respondents saw sales growth of 30% or more, and 42% reported revenue growth of at least 10%.
In addition, 94% of respondents noted significant improvements in site performance post-migration. 86% highlighted increased customization options and 62% found the new platform easier to use.
When evaluating the success of an ecommerce platform, businesses focused most on the platform’s ability to enhance competitiveness (67%), followed by total cost of ownership (56%) and customer satisfaction (56%).
Additionally, commercetools found that:
- 92% of those who recently migrated to new platforms expressed satisfaction, with the majority being either “satisfied” or “very satisfied.”
- 83% of respondents held a favorable view of composable commerce.
And data security remains a top concern, with 36% of potential migrators citing it as the main obstacle. However, among recent migrators, only 3% felt their data was insecure during the transition, suggesting that most organizations did not experience increased vulnerabilities.
“Businesses using monolithic ecommerce platforms face mounting challenges due to these systems’ lack of flexibility, agility, scalability and higher operational costs compared to composable solutions,” added Goetsch.
