Claire Spofford spoke about the CEO transition on J.Jill's third-quarter earnings call.

Women’s apparel retailer J.Jill has opened a search for a new CEO. The next chief executive will replace Claire Spofford, who announced her retirement last week.

Spofford briefly discussed her departure in the company’s Q3 earnings call on Dec. 11. That earnings report saw J.Jill’s new sales grow 0.3% year over year to $151.3 million in its fiscal third quarter ended Nov. 2.

“After four years leading this incredible company and after nearly three decades leading retail organizations, I have decided that the time is right for a new chapter,” Spofford said, pointing to the company’s achievements on her watch.

J.Jill is No. 286 in the Top 1000. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of the largest North American online retailers. There, Digital Commerce 360 categorizes J.Jill as an Apparel & Accessories retailer. Digital Commerce 360 projects J.Jill’s online sales will reach $309.55 million in 2024.

Spofford’s time as J.Jill’s CEO

J.Jill CEO Claire Spofford“I am extremely proud of what our team has accomplished together, transforming J.Jill into a stronger, more agile retailer positioned for sustainable growth,” Spofford stated.

The company’s Q3 earnings beat analysts’ expectations, helped by J.Jill’s loyalty program and infrastructure modernization efforts.

J.Jill has retained an executive search firm to assist in identifying Spofford’s successor. The company was founded in 1959 as an outdoor retailer in Massachusetts, but it has undergone a transformation into a broader women’s apparel company and is now based in Greater Boston.

“Under Claire’s leadership, J.Jill has strengthened its operating model and made strategic investments to improve the overall health of the business, creating a pathway toward profitable, sustainable growth,” said Michael Rahamim, chairman of the board at J.Jill. “We are grateful for Claire’s service and unwavering commitment to the brand, customer, team, and our shareholders.”

Spofford has held a variety of leadership roles at retail companies. She spent four years as president of Cornerstone Brands (which owns home furnishing brands like Frontgate) before taking the helm at J.Jill, her second time at the company. She served as executive vice president of marketing at J.Jill prior to that.

What J.Jill’s next CEO will need to do

One women’s retail expert tells Digital Commerce 360 that J.Jill’s new leader must adapt to a rapidly changing landscape.

“Ecommerce now drives much of the retail sector’s growth, with personalized shopping experiences and cross-channel integration as baseline consumer expectations, making digital transformation a top priority,” said Brian Lim, the founder and CEO of the online apparel retailer iHeartRaves.

He added that today’s consumer consists of fashion enthusiasts who are looking for all-inclusive styles that can be worn in multiple ways.

“And as such, the demand for multifunctional and athleisure clothing is on the rise,” Lim assessed, adding that at the same time, sustainability can no longer be overlooked and that more and more customers today are demanding eco-friendly options and transparency in the pieces they are investing in.

“Thus, J.Jill needs a forward-thinking leader capable of integrating these values into its operations and messaging,” Lim said.

However, competition from other retailers in the same space will be something J.Jill’s new leader must battle.

“Economic pressures create another layer of complexity,” Lim stated. “The ability to balance operational efficiency with strategic investments in growth will be a hallmark of effective leadership in this volatile market.”

He emphasized that success will hinge on leveraging data to refine everything from inventory management to customer outreach.

“With the right leader — someone who fosters innovation, leads with vision, and adapts to market realities — J.Jill can further solidify its role as a leading women’s lifestyle brand,” he said.
